  1. Delaney's definition of popular culture, which emphasizes its role as the vernacular culture actively engaged with by the public, highlights its dynamic and ever-changing nature. This perspective was familiar but enriched my understanding of how pop culture is not merely a backdrop but a reflective and influential force in daily life. My own relationship with pop culture is deeply intertwined with my academic pursuits; I've often drawn on contemporary media, music, and trends to illustrate and contextualize theoretical concepts in my studies. For instance, analyzing the cultural impact of viral internet phenomena or dissecting the narratives in popular TV shows has proven to be an effective way to engage with broader social theories. By integrating pop culture into my academic work, I’ve found that it provides a tangible connection between abstract ideas and real-world experiences, making the material more relatable and relevant.

  2. Delaney says that popular culture can be recognized as the vernacular or people's culture that predominates in a society at a point in time. Pop culture involves the aspects of social life most actively involved by the public. Yes, the definition was new to me as I do not know too much about popculture, only a little bit. Yes, I have been able to find new ways to bring popculture interests into my studies by using different movies or novels to show a certain theme or problem.

  3. Delaney’s definition of pop culture was not new to me, but it allowed me to understand it a lot better. For me, I thought pop culture referred to things that are popular among crowds of people or things that were trending. Delaney's article has helped me gain a better understanding of pop culture. Pop culture is the way in which we express ourselves and our identities that are commonly seen and accepted in society over time. I have found ways to bring pop culture interests into my studies by watching relevant media that is connected to my field of study, as well as connecting my academic concepts to different movies and television shows.

  4. Delaney described pop culture as the vernacular or people's culture that is dominant in society at a given period. This definition was not new to me, as I heavily depend on pop culture for my academic pursuits. As a fashion student, we heavily depend on pop culture and current events to determine trends, anticipate next trends, and understand consumer preferences and demands, among other factors. Pop culture plays a significant role in shaping the fashion industry. Therefore, personally, pop culture has an influence on me daily.

  5. Delany says that pop culture is a product or form of expression and identity widely accepted at a particular time. We see this all the time with trends on social media or within society. For example, the word "demure" is currently trending within pop culture because of how one uses the word. Now you see celebrities and ads from brands using this word to be able to relate to the younger and social audience. Pop culture to me is are trends that other people find within traditional cultural communities. For example, the use of AAVE (African American Vernacular English) is always trending and is seen as pop culture, but for the African American community is not pop culture because is it how they are raised. Sometimes pop culture is not really pop culture because it can show the cultural traditions that happen in their community that become a trend in society.

  6. Delaney's definition of pop culture isn't new to me, however it does bring to light things I haven't put much thought into. Delaney describes pop culture as "the vernacular or
people’s culture that predominates in a society at a
point in time." I think it's important to call to attention the phrase "at a point in time" as pop culture is always relevant because it is always changing. I think I am heavily involved in pop culture, anyone with a device connected to the internet and social media is. In my personal life however, I find myself influenced by what my favorite celebrities are doing or what they put out. Sometimes this influence can be negative but usually it is positive for me.

Delaney's definition of pop culture was not new to me. However, since this article was published in 2007, I do think it stands to be updated. He did mention that fads can come and go quickly due to mass media, but I think in this day and age, they can come and go even faster. My father is an english and media studies professor at St. Joseph's University in New York. He teaches many classes about pop culture and often asks me about pop culture generationally. I think it's very interesting to examine the ways in which pop culture varies between generations. I'm curious how this will be shown as we discuss in class.

  8. Delaney's definition of pop culture was not new to me. However, as they addressed its history and impact on society, pop culture seems to feel new now. Before this reading, I would say I identified with pop culture in terms of being a part of the masses that jumps on trends and pushes for unique styles to "cease to remain unique." After the reading, I feel more distant from pop culture although I will continue to be a contributing factor to its impact on society. I feel as though I am the intrusion that Delaney described pop culture to be in regards to folk culture. I view pop culture to be significant, but not more than other cultures or aspects of said cultures that make it okay for erasures.

  9. The definition was not new. However, I did not know it had to do with industrialization as much as it does but now it makes sense. I am aware of pop culture as I am apart of the generation that grew up with the rise of social media. The pop culture changes faster than it ever has. I am connected to the sports pop culture since I watch a lot of sports and the Olympics really shows the different cultures. I find pop culture in my studies from being a Criminal Justice major and really seeing how the media can change a persons outlook on Criminal Justice.

  10. Delaney's definition of pop culture was very new to me. I did not know much about pop culture and the exact definition before reading this, and now I feel like I have a better understanding. My relationship with pop culture- I would say I practice it daily on accident. Slang terms, different styles to dress, and different cultured food, I practice all of those to this day. I unfortunately have not been able to incorporate pop culture in my studies as much as I want to. I need to become more comfortable with it.

  11. Delaney's definition of pop culture was familiar to me. I did a deep dive into different definitions a few months ago. It was similar to definitions I've seen before but different in that it was his own. My relationship with pop culture mainly forms from social media or trends my friends tell me about. Over the summer, my campers gave me lessons on pop culture in their eyes. They told me my style needed to be upgraded and that I should learn the new slang terms. They went over new slang terms from their generation with me for hours. I practice pop culture by trying new foods from different cultures. I haven't found ways to incorporate pop culture into my studies, but I'm eager to start.

  12. Delaney's definition of pop culture was new to me, and he definitely has me looking more into pop culture and brings a lot of things into the light and expresses pop culture more. I did not know all these facts about pop culture before reading this. My relationship with pop culture is different type of clothing styles, food cultures and sometimes slang terms. I have not been able to find ways to bring any pop culture interest into my studies, but I want to start.

  13. Delaney’s definition of pop culture wasn’t completely new to me but it was more expansive than I considered pop culture to be. He talks about all the different aspects of pop culture such as: music, print, cyber culture, sports, entertainment, leisure, etc. When I first think of pop culture I just think of social media so it’s new to see how extensive it is. I think my relationship with pop culture relates more with sports and music. I’ve played sports all of my life and have always been interested/involved in watching them as well. I mostly watch soccer and am a big fan of Real Madrid and CBF. For music, I think it’s a big part of pop culture for most people because it’s a form of expression.

  14. I definitely believe that pop- culture means/ has a different context of something different to different people. It's in the name, CULTURE. This is what makes the media's influence significant. It is mainly for a younger audience and because times are changing, it is crucial for pop culture to thrive. Delaney put into words exactly why different groups are able to thrive when collaborating. We have all been fed the same new information and trends. It's so easily accessible, that we will be knowledgeable basically forcefully. It is almost impossible to miss cultures and trends. Pop culture is one of the best things we have grown to endure.

  15. I can agree that pop culture is comprised of various elements that can all be affected by multiple different things like age, race, sex, etc. I can also confirm and see that the rapidly changing world due to technology, has had drastic effects on how information and trends are spread throughout the world. And in turn I realize that lack of media access and generational thoughts on social media in general can affect one’s access and interpretation of said pop culture. I think Delaney’s view and definition of pop culture, is something that is not new and provides a broad and well rounded view that makes the information easy to understand, despite differences of backgrounds.

    1. I think that personally pop culture affects my studies not majorly, but I think that differences within upbringing and background can definitely change the way one approaches situations.

  16. Delaney's perspective on pop culture provided a deeper understanding of how everyday elements like music, sports (soccer), television, and technology shape our social interactions. Pop culture is a unifying force that reflects our shared experiences and helps us connect with others.
Pop culture is a constant part of my life; I've integrated my pop culture interests into my academic work, using popular music and television shows to illustrate points and make learning more engaging.
Delaney's insights have made me think more critically about the impact of pop culture on our lives. It's interesting to consider how something as simple as a TV show or a sports event can influence societal norms and personal identities in ways we might not even realize.

  17. Although I had a general understanding of what pop culture is, Delaney's definition helped me understand it better. He states many different aspects of pop culture including: music, print, cyber culture, sports, entertainment, leisure, etc. Pop culture is definitely a big part of my life, especially in the aspect of music and TV. I love talking with people about new music and TV like "The Bachelorette." It's crazy how pop culture changes so frequently because of today's media and technology, but I think its fun to try and keep up with it.

  18. Delaney’s definition of pop culture wasn’t completely new to me back there were a few things that I read about and didn’t know previously. For me, pop culture is pretty much a part of my daily life. Whether it's scrolling on TikTok, watching new shows, or talking about the latest viral trend with friends, it's everywhere. These shared experiences create a sense of connection with others. Like, when a new season of a popular show comes out, it feels like everyone is watching and talking about it, which makes for easy conversation and a feeling of being part of a larger community. Right now I can’t find any direct ways to bring pop culture into my studies, but hopefully, I’ll figure it out soon.

  19. Delaney's definition of pop culture was not new to me, but it did expand my view on how much popular culture has changed over the past two decades. The concept of how pop culture has become more widespread from advancements in technology is especially familiar to me because I took AP human geography in high school and learned a lot about globalization in that class. Pop culture is in a way intertwined with my life, as I spend plenty of time consuming different forms of media and engaging with content on social media platforms which affects the way I speak, dress, and my interests. Pop culture plays a big part in my friendships as well because the humor we share and conversations we have are often based on current events and media we consume. I have definitely brought certain pop culture interests into my studies before through different essays and projects, for instance one of the examples I provided in an essay for my AP Lang exam had to do with favoritism in the Grammys.

  20. Delaney's definition of pop culture is exactly what I imagined when I try to come up with a broad definition of pop culture. Although there are nuances to the state of pop culture today, I think that Delaney did the best he could to try and involve every aspect of pop culture into one definition. I feel as though I am tuned into pop culture, but I am not as informed on it as others are. I have a love for learning new information and I am very nosy, which allows me to have an interest in what is going on in pop culture, but at the same time, I also recognize that pop culture is not necessarily a perfect image of what the real world looks like so I do not like to engage too much with it. I have somewhat been able to bring pop culture into my studies through my Africana Studies Class because we connect the past to the present in multiple ways that I never would have considered.

  21. Personally, pop culture is a significant part of my daily life. I enjoy following the latest music releases, binge-watching trending shows, and participating in discussions on social media about current events or viral moments. It’s a way for me to stay connected with what’s happening in the world and engage in conversations with others.

  22. Aliyah Ibrahim: Delaney's definition of pop culture for me was explained as popular trends, music, movies, shows, and even slang that a vast majority of the society takes part in. I enjoy pop culture heavily based on the music I listen too and the shows I watch, pop culture surrounds me everyday. In the past I have combined both pop culture with projects done in school and for example in this class the movies I will have to eventually watch.

  23. Kylan:
Delaney’s definition of pop culture have opened my eyes more to the significance of the subject. Before reading the text, I believed pop culture was a new aged term that was created from the social media app twitter, currently known as X, but this text proved me wrong. I have now realized the actual meaning of pop culture and how it’s influence on society today. That being said, my relationship with pop-culture remains the same with a more open minded approach. I now realize that pop culture isn’t just a “meme” but how it can affect the world economically & mindset/culture. I believe this class helps with my studies in the business studies because it can influence what money is being spent in what trends.

  24. Delaney’s perspective on pop culture wasn’t entirely new to me, but he did break down it’s meaning in a way that helped me understand it more in depth. He defines pop culture as the “culture of the people” highlighting elements like music, sports, fashion and foods. I would say I agree with his view and that it serves as a way for people to come together. I have been surrounded by pop culture my whole life, whether through social media or personal experiences. It provides a way for individuals to express themselves and connect with those around them. Learning about Delaney’s perspective on pop culture has broadened my knowledge and given me a new perspective.
