So where does all of this leave you with regard to how you think about schooling, education, and their purposes? Note: Here I am particularly interested in how/whether this course has helped you to think about where your ideas about school and education come from and whether they have changed.

I really enjoyed this course. I was recommended by a friend to take the course since she said the course was different in a good way of illustrating how pop culture plays a huge role in education. Culture can influence education in a good and bad way depending on each individual. We've learned how media, documentaries, songs, books, films can depict school in many different ways. The class overall taught me how education can be influenced by pop culture but it can vary from individual.
ReplyDeleteThis course has broadened my perspective on schooling, education, and their purposes by revealing how deeply they are shaped by cultural, historical, and social influences. Previously, I viewed education as a means for personal and professional growth, but analyzing it through a pop culture lens has shown me how media narratives and societal norms construct and challenge our perceptions of educational systems. Films like Clueless and The Breakfast Club highlight issues such as class dynamics, identity, and student agency, prompting me to question who educational structures truly serve and how they can evolve. This has shifted my understanding of education's purpose from solely individual achievement to a collective effort that fosters critical thinking, empathy, and social responsibility. The course has inspired me to think more critically about the cultural and historical forces shaping my views and how education can be reimagined for a more inclusive future.
ReplyDeleteAliyah Ibrahim: I liked this course because its nothing like any of the other classes I take because most of them are based on math and memorizing material. This course made me think a lot not only on pop culture but society. I actually learned a lot of valuable information in this course which I honestly didn't think I would as much as I have. I always thought schooling was just about learning certain courses and just get tested on and then never look back at the information. This class made me realize the depth of school and education.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your course because of how different it is from any other gen ed I have taken thus far. I learned so much more than I expected to. I did not know much about pop culture or even that much about the ins and outs of education, but after this course that has changed. I never thought that I could watch a movie and relate it to education in any way, but as we know we did! I love how engaged you are as a professor and how much you wanted us to take away from this class, it is very passionate and I appreciate your efforts to draw us all in because this course truly is interesting and it's needed. As a future educator, I am glad I learned about the purposes of schooling, agency, how PC influences music + documentaries etc.
ReplyDeleteThe course was not what I had anticipated it to be, but I have learned a lot more about education and the ways in which it is influenced by pop culture. Personally, I found this class to be very interesting. Having the opportunity to gain knowledge on a wide range of subjects and to listen to accounts of a diverse range of experiences has made me realize how much is actually involved in education. This course certainly changed my viewpoint on education, particularly with regard to the extent to which it is influenced by pop culture.
ReplyDeleteThis course has definitely impacted how I think about education as a whole. I can now look at education through multiple different lenses and perspectives. I feel confident enough to talk with others about the topics we covered in this class as well. I think it was very interesting to watch all of the film content that we did and relate it to certain aspects of education like race and socioeconomic class. Of course, I anticipated we would learn about how education has changed in the past years and what things caused the changes but I think our discussions really cemented things for me. Exploring student agency, curriculum, CRT, etc. was especially interesting and seeing it in films that I wouldn't have thought to relate it to was fun.
ReplyDeleteThis course has taught me a lot more about schooling and education than I would have thought of without it. It has made me think about the deeper things in education and schooling. It has helped me learn more about critical race theory. In my high school, there was not a lot of discrimination. This class has shown me more of this. Without this class, I would have not known much about it and if I experienced it in the real world I might not have realized it. This class helped me be more aware of what goes on in schools and even outside of schools.
ReplyDeleteThis course has definitely helped me think about and analyze how pop culture and various forms of media affect my views on education. During the course I have realized how the way education and schooling is portrayed in music, movies, documentaries, and books has affected my opinions in ways I may not have noticed or considered before. Specifically pop culture has affected my views on teacher student relationships, what lower class and upper class schools look like, and what the purposes of education are. My understanding of the different purposes of education has broadened as I was not previously aware of concepts such as democratic equality. Through the assignments and projects in this class I have learned how to analyze the ways different forms of media can affect my ideas about education via stylistic and plot based choices.
ReplyDeleteThis course has explored how various cultural, social, and media influences shape our ideas about schooling and education. It has helped me realize that my understanding of education was influenced not only by traditional schooling but also by the cultural narratives in popular media. Before, I saw education mainly as a way to gain knowledge and prepare for a specific career, but now I understand how media and culture shape expectations of schools, students, and teachers. Pop culture often reinforces ideals like the “perfect student” or “ideal teacher,” and this affects how we view education’s purpose. Overall, I’ve become more critical of these influences and more aware of their impact in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this class! I learned more about education and how it is influenced by the world around us. It was interesting to compare what I learned from our class last semester to what I learned in this one. I also enjoyed how this class viewed education through different mediums (movies, documentaries, music, and text). This course has changed my view on education.
ReplyDeleteThe course in general has been very informational and gave me new views on school. I feel like Ive had such a bland point of view on school
ReplyDeleteand how its required and annoying. There really is importance to education regardless of how annoying and tough it can be. The education system has blossom over time, however there are so many improvements that need to be done. The school mainly needs to focus on giving kids the care and compassion that they need of lack at home. School should be a place of learning and comfort at the same time for all students. I think that this course had opened my eyes to more of the issues that certain groups face in schools and solutions that are possible.
This course definitely gave me a different perspective on how I look at education as a whole. It made me think more deeply about the broader purposes of education, beyond just learning academic content. The topics that we’ve learned about and reviewed just helped shed light on areas of schooling and education that I probably wouldn’t have connected, or considered before.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed this course. As a future teacher, it is important to understand how agency works in a classroom and ensure that there is an equal amount. We want to give our students the best education possible and ensure that they can learn the information that makes sense for them. It also helps us think about why we teach and the purpose of school. Why are different styles of learning important? Why is understanding the lives of your students important? Why does the representation of teachers provide an important perspective for your students?
ReplyDeleteI've really enjoyed this course because it's allowed me to dig deeper into the issues and layers of education. Generally when I thought about education before this class, pop culture wasn't on my mind. Now, I can see the different perspectives where pop culture definitely does influence the education system; whether that's through television, media, music, or graphic novels. Throughout this course, we were able to see how each of these things has made contributions. I think this course has changed how I view education. Before, I viewed it simply as core subjects, homework, and stress. Now, I view it as an intersection of diverse ideas and knowledge; a place where we don't only learn math equations but a community where we can learn about new cultures and identities.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed this course in the way that it has challenged and made me think deeper about how pop culture affects how myself and others think. I liked the class discussions that we’ve had about different topics. I think one of my favorite parts of this class has been when we did the documentary portion. Getting to see all the different topics being presented and getting to analyze why things were done that certain way to either teach or gain sympathy for the audience. I think this course overall has expanded and reinforced my thinking of the broader spectrum of the world/society.

ReplyDeleteThis course opened my mind to how I view education and its purposes in our lives. I think I was always aware of the purposes that we came up with over time, but I never thought about them too hard or actually put them in perspective inside the classrooms. What we have gone over in class has made me reevaluate other students’ reasons for being in class and school aside from learning the curriculum. Of course, many students come to learn but other students may come to find a space away from home where they can take on a different role in society other than the one placed upon them in their homes or they may view education as a source of perspective into other lives, views, and beliefs. I have always seen school and education as just a way to learn and get on with life, but I’ve realized that there are other purposes that I have always connected to such as building meaningful relationships with educators that span longer than the time spent in school and gaining insight into the lives of other people and how they think.
I enjoyed this course as it got me thinking about different aspects of education and popculture that I had not been aware of. I liked this class due to the films we watched and how we were able to connect those to the purposes of education. This class has taught me to be more open minded and to find my purpose for wanting to teach. This class has a lot of valuable information in it and I think I learned a lot.
ReplyDeleteI always grew up with the idea that students should conform to the teaching style of their instructor as they know best. This course has opened my eyes not only as a student that this narrative is far from the truth but also as a hopeful future teacher. I think I would have been a very different educator without some of the information I learned in this class not only from the course materials and Professor Stemhagen but also the insights shared by my classmates. I'm very happy to walk out of this class this semester knowing I'm more prepared to teach than I would have been without it.
ReplyDeleteThis course has shifted my perspective on education, showing me it’s not just about individual success but also about promoting diversity and critical thinking. Discussions like those on New Kid and censorship highlighted how education shapes whose voices are heard, emphasizing its role in creating inclusive and equitable spaces. I now see schooling as both a tool for personal growth and a means to drive social change. (Francis)
ReplyDeleteThis course has changed my perspective on schooling and education. Previously, I viewed school as simply a place to acquire facts and prepare for the future. Now, I understand it encompasses so much more. Education shapes our thought processes, influences our interactions with the world, and even affects our self-perception.
ReplyDeleteSchools aren’t just places to learn but places where values are passed down. This course also has inspired me to see education not merely as a tool for achieving success, but as a way to broaden perspectives and cultivate critical thinking. It has increased my awareness of how education influences the society we build.
This course has really helped me understand how cultural, social, and media influences shape our views on education. I’ve come to realize that my perspective on schooling wasn’t just shaped by traditional education but also by the cultural messages in popular media. Before, I mainly saw education as a way to gain knowledge and prepare for a career. However, I now see how media and culture influence the expectations of schools, students, and teachers. Pop culture often promotes ideas like the “perfect student” or “ideal teacher,” which impacts how we view the purpose of education. Overall, this course has given me a deeper understanding of the broader factors that shape our perceptions of schooling.

ReplyDeleteThis class has opened my eyes to a lot of new things. It helped me understand the real world more and how the education system works. This class helped me see how education is portrayed in books, movies, and music. My favorite assignment was when we had to make a playlist because it showed me how much pop culture is in the music world.
