We’re All In This Together- High School Musical Cast
ReplyDeleteLyrics: https://genius.com/High-school-musical-cast-were-all-in-this-together-lyrics
This whole entire musical is how I perceived my highschool experience would be. I grew up with two older sisters so I have seen each movie, know the soundtrack like the back of my hand, and have occasionally put on our own reenactment of some of the songs. This song specifically is especially optimistic and each time I watched it, I was so excited to get to experience high school like how they did. They are singing about standing together and making their dreams come true, and how there is no limit to their dreams. It’s so cliche for an American high school movie but it really does maye kids excited and optimistic. They’re all singing and dancing together at their pep rally and you can’t help but want to be there with them. It kind of perpetuates the “American Dream” in a childish kind of way. Of course, as I was watching it I wasn’t thinking all that deep into it, I just loved how bright and cheery it was.
Hi Maleah,
DeleteI'm honestly shocked that I didn't even consider including a song from a kids show or movie considering a majority of them are set in schools and absolutely affect our perception of schooling when we're children. I can definitely relate to watching High School Musical and expecting that to be what high school would be like when I was a kid.
Hi Maleah, I think pretty much any song from High School Musical is just prefect. It's definitely a classic in terms of what majority of our generation wa thinking high school would be like. I also totally agree with your analysis of just turning your brain off and enjoying the singing and dancing of the actors without putting much thought into it.
DeleteI love that you chose this song. I think the whole movie series can explain education in a lot of many different ways. I did not even think about any of these songs ahah.
DeleteHi Maleah! I also chose a song from high school, and I agree that it was a part of what I thought high school would be like. Of course, most of it wasn't- but it definitely does give kids something to look forward to.
DeleteHi Maleah, I also used a song from a movie. I used a song about a man's life growing up in the hood.
DeleteTo Sir with Love by Lulu

This song was written for and included in the first movie I watched for the 2nd unit in this class, “To Sir, With Love”. In the context of the movie, the students present this song to their teacher at the end of the year dance to thank him for everything he taught them and to say goodbye to someone who became a mentor figure and friend to them all. It's a heartfelt song about how teachers can change their students' lives and are important in shaping the futures of the youth. Most people can relate to having a teacher that inspired them somehow or changed their outlook on a specific subject or education in general. For the video I linked, I decided to use the Glee cover of this song rather than the performance in the original movie since it begins with a monologue the students give their Glee club coach before they sing to him because of how he changed every single one of them after they joined the club which I believe helps highlight the songs meaning.
Hi, Ashley I really like your song and the meaning behind it. I also like that you used the glee version so people like myself who didn't watch the movie can still get some context on why the song means so much to the students and teacher.
DeleteHi Ashley! Having watched the same movie, I really liked that you chose this song and what you said about it. I think it is interesting how if you were to just look at the lyrics of the song you wouldn't suspect the correlation to a teacher's positive influence on a bunch of teenagers, but in the context of the movie the impact is much stronger.

The lyrics "When I get older, I will be stronger" have resonated with me as time has passed. It's 2024 now, and I've developed a lot of strength and resilience, both emotionally and physically. Growing up, I faced a lot of bullying from middle school through my sophomore year of high school. I vividly recall a time in class when I stood up for myself against someone mocking my accent. It's astonishing how people can ridicule others for their accents without realizing the value of being multilingual. Just because I speak with an accent doesn't mean I can't be understood, but some choose to overlook that.
Hi Fatima, This was a really good connection and I love your story and how you grew from it.
DeleteSong: When We Were Young by Adele
ReplyDeleteLyrics: https://genius.com/Adele-when-we-were-young-lyrics
Summary: This song is about how seeing your partner change into someone else. I think when she specifically talks about trying to “photograph them in the light in case it is the last time that they might be exactly like they were before they realized that they were sad and getting older..” it was really powerful in thoughts of trying to hold on to what something was before. This song reminds me of class in the thought that she is trying to hold on and create agency within her relationship with this person that she feels is falling apart. She is trying to hold onto what something used to be. Which I think a lot of people can relate to in the broader spectrum of society. Trying to hold onto youth and being scared of getting older is many people's fear. This song just reminds me personally of school around that time of senior year of high school when everyone was scared to finally graduate and move on to wherever they were going in life outside of k-12 schooling. Wanting to stay young and have no worries, especially after feeling really stuck during covid times.
Hey Gabby,
DeleteI really like how you were able to analyze a song that isn't technically about school or education and find a way to interpret it's lyrics in a new way.
I liked how you chose a song related to being young as I chose one of those in my playlist as well. I liked how you analyzed the song and explained how to related to education.
DeleteAliyah Ibrahim:The song I chose
ReplyDelete“The Man” by Taylor Swift, this song is about how men and women are viewed differently in society. She talks about all of her achievements and how if she were a man she would be viewed differently and basically better. I'm so sick of running as fast as I can
Wondering if I'd get there quicker
If I was a man
And I'm so sick of them coming at me again
'Cause if I was a man
Then I'd be the man
That part she's trying to explain that if she were a man how it would be easier. In the beginning she contrasted how when a man and women do the same thing like being ambitious men are praised while women are criticized. Also she mentions how she feels like she works harder in the industry just to be on the same level as men.
Hi Emma, I love this song but I never really realized how this could be interpreted as this, super smart correlation.

ReplyDeleteDropout -- MICHELLE
ReplyDeleteLyrics: https://genius.com/Michelle-band-dropout-lyrics
MICHELLE is my favorite band at the moment, and I only pretty recently started listening to them. This song is a more explicit example of experiences in schooling, focusing on college which is a very different experience in education especially when compared to what we’ve studied in class. The chorus sings, “I’m losing 50K to black out every night in my room/Lying to my mother when she’s checking on me/ Oh, all I wanna learn is how to drop out.” This points out a common college experience of paying for the “experience” rather than the “college.” I remember my elementary school teacher telling me before I went off to college that it would be the place where the students would be more willing and focused to learn, that whoever goes to college is “meant to go to college.” However, while I do see this sort of mentality in a lot of people, the number of people that would relate more closely to MICHELLE’s lines may be larger. I’ve never thought about this as a bad thing, but more an interesting aspect that comes with college. I’ve realized over the years that education is not for everyone, considering the people, environment, and the “routine.” I have also realized that if you’re doing it for someone else instead of yourself then paying so much money for an education you do not care as much about may not be for you.
Hi Emma!
ReplyDeleteAs It Was provides a great sense of nostalgia that I've always liked about the song and something you noted as well. I liked how you connected it to the changes education underwent during COVID while also looking at it from a broader angle.
Don't Be A Dropout by James Brown
ReplyDeleteJames Brown – Don’t Be a Dropout Lyrics | Genius Lyrics
Don't Be A Dropout is a song encouraging teenagers to stay in school. It was released as a single in 1966. It was written by Burt Jones but recorded by James Brown. The lyric “Without an education, you might as well be dead” speaks volume and I take it as if you don't graduate and get an education it's going be hard to survive and get a good paying job because most jobs want you to at least have a high school diploma. I heard this song when I was young from my grandfather, and he would always tell us to stay in school.
Hi Samia, I think this song has a good message. Education is important and people should be encouraged to finish. I like your take on the song.
DeleteI can- Nas
ReplyDeleteLyrics: Nas – I Can Lyrics | Genius Lyrics
Video: https://youtu.be/RvVfgvHucRY?si=-b-vizGPjdWhq2gx
This song is one of those songs you can relate to in many aspects of your life. In the song, Nas delivers a positive message aimed at young people, particularly children and teenagers, encouraging them to stay focused, work hard, and believe in their potential to achieve greatness. Growing up in what people would consider a “misfortunate” neighborhood, songs like these inspired me to know that I don’t have to be a product of my environment and that I can truly be what I want to be. I’d been listening to this song since I was a kid, so it helped me going through each phase of school. Whenever someone would ask me what I want to be I’d catch myself referring back to the lyrics “I know I can be what I wanna be if I work hard at it I’ll be where I wanna be.”

ReplyDelete7 Years (Lukas Graham)
Lyrics: https://genius.com/Lukas-graham-7-years-lyrics
I remember the day this song came out. Personally, it reminds me of Hong Kong, and my time well spent there. During my two years there, I was well known (mostly because I was one of the few people of color attending the school). During field trips or just activities, I used to sing on the bus with my classmates. When the song first came out, I had one more year left in HK. But as that time counted down, all of a sudden I had one month left. Time went by so fast. I remember this song being in the background of me and my friends hanging out for the last time before I had to leave. This song just talks about growing up and the pains of it. Its great on one end, but then you think about the memories that you are leaving behind, which makes thinking about it not as great.
Hi Joey, I also grew up listening to this song during my teenage years. I like the song a lot. I think it has a lot of meaning to it.
DeleteI think this song is a good representation of childhood and looking back on your childhood. I forgot about this song until now but thinking back I definitely can relate to this song.
DeleteI remember this song being everywhere!!! It definitely relates to school and life in general.
DeleteHeading South (Zach Bryan)
ReplyDeletehttps://genius.com/Zach-bryan-heading-south-lyrics
Heading South is a song that I connected with immediately after hearing it for the first time. It talks about a boy who has big dreams that no one believed in. He worked hard to achieve those dreams even though everyone was against him and he felt alone. I think this can be tied into education because sometimes people are working against you and it can be really disheartening. I remember my guidance counselor and teachers used to tell me that I wouldn’t make it into the college’s I applied for because I wasn’t smart enough. I almost gave up on my dream of going to college because I was so discouraged. So I think this song represents that not everyone is here to help you but to push through regardless.
Hi Emma, I like how you related this song to your experience with covid. I think there was a big shift in education with covid and it's sad to look back and see all we missed and are continuing to miss.

ReplyDeleteRags to Riches (Rod Wave)
ReplyDeletehttps://genius.com/Rod-wave-rags2riches-2-lyrics
Rod Wave is my favorite artist. His songs are about the problems he goes through/went through in life. I like how he talks about real-life situations that people can relate to. He is not like any other artist I have listened to before. In this song, he talks about getting out of the mud. He talks about going from the rags to being rich, hence the title. He was a black man growing up in the hood. He was at the bottom, and now he is at the top. He lives a luxurious life now. I think it relates to the class by being about how he was from a low-class community. It also relates to the class by being about opportunity. He did not have much opportunity growing up but he got his songs out and his songs became popular. Once his songs became popular he started getting rich and could bring himself and his family out the hood.
Hi Brianna! I have also heard this song and I agree with you in this song that it kind of motivates you to search for opportunities.
DeleteBrianna, I like the song you chose and I agree that Rod Wave has really meaningful and inspirational songs. I agree with you in the sense that he had little to no opportunities, and this song talks about how he got away from that and headed for success.
DeleteHi Viki, it’s inspiring to hear how the song helped you navigate your own doubts and ultimately find clarity and purpose in your academic and career path.
ReplyDelete“Dear Society" by Madison Beer focuses on how social media can affect oneself and their image, and how it can take over their life. This song relates to class in the sense of social media taking over new generations, and how negative society can be to those social media stars online, like Madison Beer, influencing pop culture trends, specifically beauty standards, fashion, and music. “I can’t control myself, I’m addicted to the hell.” “My heart is getting sick from the tar that's on your lips, yeah, you're bad for my health, you should hurt somebody else.” “Diet’s that I shouldn’t try, it feels like social suicide.” “Been 21 since 17, thanks to all the magazines, man, sometimes I just wanna scream and break my screen.” “Dear society, you've pushed me to the edge…” My connection to this song is I know that social media can be a negative influence on mental health and self image. Especially as a young girl, it’s extremely easy to dwindle on the fact that I don’t look like these models, and I never will. Only, social media is something so widely used in today's day and age, and it should be used to promote positivity and uplift people, not tear them down.
ReplyDeleteAdair, I really like your blog post. I really like this song and SZA, and I never really thought about the meaning behind this song. I agree with you when you say it's about self growth and reflection, and how we as students will have better days to come. Good job.
ReplyDeleteThe song I chose for this is Wheels on the Bus by Melanie Martinez. The song appears on her sophomore album from 2019 Named K-12. Melanie has always fascinated because of her unique voice and style of describing life with strange metaphors. Wheels on the bus talks about how adult supervison in school needs to be better and not let kids get away with as much as they do.
ReplyDeleteThis song really embodies nostalgic about school and our younger days!!! It honesty makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteHigh School - Kelsea Ballerini
ReplyDeleteLyrics: https://genius.com/Kelsea-ballerini-high-school-lyrics
Video: Kelsea Ballerini - High School (Acoustic)
Description: This song offers a nostalgic look at the high school years and the feelings of not quite fitting in. The contrast between the idealized high school experience and reality makes it relatable for anyone who didn’t have a stereotypical experience.I always connected with the lyrics that express longing for something more, and this song gave me a sense of reassurance that there’s life beyond those school walls. It feels like a time capsule to those early morning bus rides.
I really liked your blog post. It was on my playlist when driving to school, and I listened to it quite a lot in high school. I looked at the lyrics in this song in the same lense that you did, that it was about growth and anticipating better days and it did get me through some hard days.
ReplyDeleteHi Emma, this song brings back a lot of memories from when it was trending and when it was in the back of a lot of videos online. I like how you related this song back to education and how it is not the same as it was before. There are a lot of things in the world that have been forever changed from the pandemic, but I think another way to look at it is that some things have been changed for the better :)

Video: HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3 High School Musical
This is the last song performed in the third movie of the trilogy, High School Musical. They
perform it after they graduate from high school. The scene evokes a sense of nostalgia,
reminding us of our own high school days. The lyrics resonate with me, reminding me to cherish
the memories from high school and the people. I was fortunate to finish middle and high school
with my best friends. Our journeys together have been rough, but we cherish our time together.
As they say in the song, “Let's celebrate where we come from, The friends who've been there all
along.”
"Everything I Wanted" by Billie Eilish
ReplyDeleteBillie Eilish's "Everything I Wanted" really hit home with the pressure put on so many students,
including myself. It's about exterior success and a lack of interior peace. And while there's such a
huge urge to succeed at school, sometimes it does not connect inside. Billie portrays precisely
just how it feels not knowing where you fit in, even while on top of the world, supposedly living
your dream.
It speaks to me personally about how important it is to take care of one's mental health and
self-care, let alone within school itself, when it is so easy to forget who you are outside of grades
and achievements.

Commentary: This song symbolizes resilience and growth. It reminds me to stay optimistic during challenging times in school, reinforcing the idea that persistence pays off.
