October 30…Thoughts About Documentaries

Please blog a bit about documentaries as an art form/mode of teaching and learning. You can write about whatever you choose…some possibilities: the documentarian’s role in shaping the presentation of reality, their potential to create social change, their relationship to other forms of pop culture.

  1. I think most documentaries tell good stories with accurate information. Unfortunately, it is hard to believe that everything that they are saying is 100% true. I think that is where the issues could arrise. I think documentaries hold a lot of information and they tell a certain story to prove something or to explain something.

  2. Documentaries combine art and education, using real-life narratives to present a powerful perspective on reality. The documentarian’s creative choices shape how viewers perceive the story, giving documentaries the unique power to inform and inspire social change. Within pop culture, documentaries resonate widely, sparking discussions and influencing media across various platforms.

  3. Aliyah Ibrahim: The documentary we watched in class today about the shoe shiner who used to have a lot of money and lost it all. I think that documentary was to maybe create social change and how everything can change in a second, how money doesn't in itself make you happy, and to always be kind.

  4. I think documentaries are a great way to bring awareness to a topic. Even though the documentarians can edit and shape the documentary any way they see fit to tell the narrative, there is still something that can be learned from watching them as well as analyzing them. Watching and learning about these documentaries has made me want to start watching more documentaries.

  5. I think documentaries are a great way to teach things to people in a visual way (especially if the information is true.) Piggybacking off of Maleah, the documentarian can shape and shift the documentary but people can still learn something from it. For example, the shoe shiner video was edited with aesthetics and rhetoric, but still taught me the point of the documentary, which was money doesn't make people, kindness over being rich, things like that.

  6. Documentaries can effectively portray virtually any topic/subject if they are done well. There will always be bias from the documentarian that makes its way into the documentary since only so much can be included and editing choices end up affecting the viewers perspective on the topic. Sometimes documentaries can be so successful in shaping the watchers view on it's subject that they can shift people from believing one thing to believing something entirely different or they could introduce people to an issue/event/subject they hadn't been aware of.

  7. I personally think that documentaries can be entertaining and factual at the same time. Like I mentioned before national geographic tends to have so many cool and interesting documentaries about earth and its animals. There are also so many good ones on Netflix like quiet on set about Dan Schneider. People will most likely believe things in a documentary or documentaries than in reality TV as well. There are however still just as many if not more editing choices and scene rearrangements as in reality TV and other TV shows.

  8. Documentaries are a captivating art form that combines knowledge and storytelling, allowing audiences to connect with complicated facts and societal challenges. The documentarian’s role is critical because their framing, narrative style, and subject matter selections can all have a big impact on how viewers see the themes at hand. This genre has the capacity to effect social change by increasing awareness and sparking debate on key subjects.

  9. I think documentarians treat documentaries more as art than they should. As time has passed and the desire for appealing to aesthetics, documentarians have overlooked one of the main purposes including providing alternative perspectives and have instead prioritized the processing of information for the sake of making it “look good.” A lot of people look at documentaries as a way to learn about certain topics and ideas in a way that speaks from all sides. When documentarians start to care more about the aesthetics, the message and purpose goes awry; documentaries would then lack proper representation of the topic. This issue makes us consider the responsibility of not only documentarians but creatives taking life and turning it into an art form. It makes me wonder where the lines are drawn in the world of documentaries with documentarians.

  10. I think documentaries give the audience a chance to look into the lives that the documentaries are about. They challenge the viewers to confront uncomfortable truths and consider diverse perspectives. As an art form, documentaries have the ability to educate, make people think, and inspire change, which solidifies their place as a vital component of pop culture.

  11. I think documentaries are a way to share the stories that would impact the world. Documentaries can be related to popular or have deeper meanings for people. They can put a perspective on the audience that no one has seen before and give them a different experience. From what we have talked about in class, there are many ways to classify what a documentary is and I think that is what makes them unique. There is no right or wrong way to classify what a documentary is but the message or information that is gained from them is lasting on the audience.

  12. Documentation is an art form of sharing a real-life experience of someone or used to show the reality of something. I like looking for the message or deeper meaning that many documentaries have. It can relate to pop culture or influence the trends of that time. An example of this is the documentary series of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders; after the show came out, everyone wanted to be a DCC for Halloween.

  13. Documentaries have to have forms of pop culture. Pop culture is based on what is "trendy." For people to be tuned in and watch the documentary it has to be based on somewhat of what is going on or what has happened in the past. I think they can try to create social change. It can bring awareness to a situation. Nobody can make a person do something. However, if they see these issues they can be more informed about it. They might remember something they read and want to change what they do to help that issue.

  14. Documentaries are more than recordings; they are stories that help us understand and feel deeply about real-life issues. While they are based on facts, filmmakers craft them with specific perspectives. This approach allows documentaries to impact us significantly by turning statistics into relatable human stories.
for example, "The 13th" makes complex topics easier to understand and often sparks important conversations in our everyday lives. By combining artistic elements with educational content, documentaries give us a glimpse into experiences we might never have, showing us that storytelling can truly enlighten and change our views.

  15. I personally think that documentaries provide a great alternative way of teaching. I enjoy them as a mode of teaching because the can give a more personal approach to a topic that maybe a teacher can't provide. It can give students that may feel underrepresented in any way a sense of belonging that they can see they aren't alone. I think that documentarians play a huge role in how their documentary is perceived, with different artistic choices. The way the information is clipped together, the lighting, the type of music being added to shots at a certain time are all important aspects of documentaries that shape learning.

  16. I personally am a fan of documentaries when it comes to a topic that I enjoy. I think that documentaries are a very interesting way to share stories to make an impact. They have the ability to show different perspectives on a topic that people haven’t heard before.

  17. Documentaries can be created to showcase art, teaching, and learning. The documentaries that I normally watch are educational and informational. I normally like to watch crime documentaries since I have an interest in learning about cases that occured in the United States. Regardless, of the different types of documentaries that exist I do be that there are some that are pointless such as the bachelorette. I see this "documentary" as entertainment and not informational. Overall, I do believe there are documentaries that were created to be a form of art and a mode of teaching/learning however, it can vary from each individual.

  18. I think documentaries are a form of art and it is a good way to teach and learn. It educates us on any topic and it's a cool way to learn new information.

  19. I have mix thoughts on documentaries. On one hand, I feel like they are very informative and I like how the documentary is laid out (narrator, song choices, actors), they do a good job keeping the audience engaged. However, on the other hand, it's hard to see what is true and what's not. Most times after I watch a documentary, I do my own research to see what is true and what isn't.

  20. As stated in my previous blog post I'm a big fan of history documentaries. Although there is a special charm in reading a book and being able to set the scene in your own head, as a history major who needs to cite his work a documentary helps me understand every angle and perspective. Getting to not only hear a story but also see animations to go along or real footage helps me learn on a deeper level is truly amazing.

  21. Documentaries also occupy a unique space in pop culture, often bridging the gap between entertainment and education. Streaming platforms have made them more accessible and popular, leading to a wider audience for works that might previously have been limited to classrooms or film festivals. This blending of accessibility with impactful content allows documentaries to not only reflect culture but actively shape it, fostering awareness and dialogue in ways few other art forms can. 22. Documentaries often incorporate elements of pop culture because pop culture reflects what is "trendy" and relevant. To capture people's attention and engage viewers, documentaries need to connect to current events or significant past happenings. I believe documentaries have the potential to create social change by raising awareness about important issues. While no one can force someone to take action, seeing these issues presented in a documentary can help viewers become more informed. They may remember something they learned and be inspired to change their own behavior to contribute to solving the problem.
